Become a Substitute Teacher

Substitute teachers are valuable members of the Penn-Harris-Madison community and they are working every day in our schools.

Penn-Harris-Madison pays its substitute teachers $75 per day.  Additionally, the district rewards those who substitute on a regular basis through an end-of-semester bonus program, making it possible to earn an extra $1,000 per year!

Substitute Teacher Incentives

Penn-Harris-Madison has enacted a bonus pay program for Substitute Teachers and Substitute Educational Assistants.  The bonus will be paid at the end of each semester and reflect the number of days an individual has worked in our schools.

  • A substitute who works 25-49 full days in semester will receive $250
  • A substitute who works 50+ days in a semester will receive $500

An employee referral program that was initiated early in 2015 remains in place for the 2016-2017 school year. P-H-M will pay $50 to an employee who refers a substitute, after the first ten days that new substitute works.

Substitute Teacher Guidelines

Each Indiana school district is allowed to set its own guidelines for substitute teachers. At Penn-Harris-Madison we require that our substitutes have at least 60 college credit hours in any area of certification. Occasionally we will waive this requirement if the applicant can provide significant documented work or volunteer experiences including name(s) and phone number(s) of immediate supervisor(s) who may be contacted for verification of this information. The applicant would also need to include letters of reference from two P-H-M school administrators.

Interested applicants should complete a substitute teacher application packet. The packet can be obtained at the Educational Services Center, 55900 Bittersweet Rd., Mishawaka, IN 46545 or you can email Tammy Gizewski, Administrative Assistant for Human Resources, to request a packet.

Here is a link to the online application.  We will apply for an expanded criminal history check on each applicant and they must hold either a valid Indiana Teaching License or a Substitute Certificate.

Substitute Teacher Training

We require all substitute teachers to complete mandatory online training. The training sessions will be distributed to the substitute via our Frontline application system once all of the paperwork has been completed.
